Hello Al,

It would help if the parentheses balanced correctly and valid SQL functions
were used (e.g., SUBSTR rather than SUBST). Here is your first example in
syntactically correct fashion.

      C/EXEC SQL
      C+ SET :WKDAY = DAYOFWEEK( DATE( SUBSTR( DIGITS( :TODAY ), 5, 4)
      C+                                                    || '-' ||
      C+                               SUBSTR( DIGITS( :TODAY ), 1, 2)
      C+                                                    || '-' ||
      C+                               SUBSTR( DIGITS( :TODAY ), 3, 2)))
      C/END-EXEC

However, DIGITS returns a string including leading zeroes (as documented in
the FM) which stuffs up the DATE function, so to make this work I had to
modify it to the following:

      C/EXEC SQL
      C+ SET :WKDAY = DAYOFWEEK( DATE( SUBSTR( DIGITS( :TODAY ), 7, 4)
      C+                                                   || '-' ||
      C+                               SUBSTR( DIGITS( :TODAY ), 3, 2)
      C+                                                   || '-' ||
      C+                               SUBSTR( DIGITS( :TODAY ), 5, 2)))
      C/END-EXEC

Of course I needed to let RPG default the date format to that weird American
way of doing things :)

However, although that basic syntax worked in ISQL, it failed in an SQLRPG
program due to not being able to find QSQPTABL in QSYS2 so either I'm missing
some database PTFs or there's an optionally installable component I haven't
installed. That's going on the list for later investigation.

Regards,
Simon Coulter.
