IBM built upgradeability into every initial System/38 and AS/400, and this was a selling feature of these systems. As PC type hardware became more powerful and cheaper on the face of it (non-reliability has it's costs), AS/400 customers demanded less expensive equipment. But less expensive equipment meant that IBM had to build less and less upgradeability into your equipment. I went back and checked, the model E10 was introduced in 1992. How many desktop PCs that you purchased in 1992 are still in use, and what is their value? Time for a reality check.
