I don't think that's entirely fair.  Java code that doesn't employ any
OS-specific extensions ("100% Pure Java") will run on any
properly-written JVM.  And if someone is shipping a JVM that doesn't run
Java correctly, then a) I expect they're violating their licence
agreement with Sun, and b) their JVM is likely to perish in the
marketplace.

And as for speed relative to VB, well, we have a product that we're
re-writing in Java from VB partly because it's faster in Java.
