You should take another look at the product.  They have a new series of
SOHO systems with 10X the performance at the same price as the previous
models (even a trade-in program!).  They do indeed support detection and
protection from SYN-flood and provide VPN support.  Can't speak for
"embryonic connection time-outs" - don't even know what they are. The PRO
models include VPN (with a single PC license) in the base price.  I use it
regularly when on the road and it works beautifully.  When I use VPN via
DSL at home there is little perceptible difference in performance between
that and being in the office.
