Re: Opinions please: GUI vs. 5250

Here is an opinion.  The blend of 5250 and GUI is a real good way to get 
bang for the buck.    Green screen already exists, its understood, it fits 
in with everything already built.  GUI works for new applications, 
especially where user training is an issue like high turn-over jobs, sales 
staff, or floor workers.  The GUI environment, in my experience, allows a 
whole new way of presenting applications.  The "event-driven" model really 
works well for a lot of inquiry applications, applications that have a lot 
of choices that must be correct, and repetitive applications. 

The other really big boon for a shop that starts developing GUI 
applications is that their green screen applications get better as the 
thinking process begins to sense how the event-driven model works. There's 
something about the cross-breeding that opens the choices one makes as one 
does the traditional green screen.  (I'd love to see comments from others 
on here that have started doing some GUI development alongside their green 
screen.)

What do you think about GUI (client/server, thick or thin client) 
interfaces
to AS/400 (iSeries!) business applications versus traditional 5250 "green
screen"? Which do you prefer and why? From the user perspective? From the
support perspective? What is your reaction to "hybrid" applications which
use green screen for some functions and GUI for others? All opinions
appreciated. Thanks!
