Oh.  Variable key length, varying starting position. 

The single greatest weakness of FMTSRC is that it is about the last 
remaining AS/400 database tool that requires that the starting position be 
a column number, and requires that the length of the sort field be a 
number.

Look at FMTSRC.  It'll do what you want and is fast.
