Jon, the address of a parameter isn't a constant value, so you can't use it for initialization. You'll have to use C specs to assign the basing pointers. Otherwise, what you're doing is fine. Whenever you don't understand an error message, try compiling with OPTION(*SECLVL) (it's available for all the CRT commands that produce a listing). It gives the full text of the error message in the message summary section at the bottom of the listing. Here's RNF7306: The initial value for a pointer field is not valid. Cause . . . . . : A basing-pointer field in static storage cannot be initialized with a non-constant address. Fields with a non-constant address are: - entry parameters (a parameter in the *ENTRY PLIST, or a parameter in the procedure-interface definition) - fields in automatic storage The initial value for the field is ignored. Recovery . . . : Change the initial value of the basing pointer. Compile again. Technical description . . . . . . . . : All fields defined in the main procedure are in static storage. Fields in subprocedures are in automatic storage unless the STATIC keyword is used on the definition of the field.
