Not until you want to update the file and need exclusive use in a 24x365 day operation. The server jobs can be ended, file updated, service program updated, server jobs restarted with the users not having to exit their application. Properly designed install programs can do the necessary functions is a matter of seconds. The users hardly notice? Hopefully. :-) Christopher K. Availability of memory and other shared resources, as well as complexity, potential failure points, redundancy, scalability, and many other factors might be considered. The question in my mind at this point is how relevant are "open data paths"? Back in the 80's IBM warned us about them. The manuals haven't changed much. They still recommend a number of ways to reduce them. But, 12 years ago 32 meg was considered to be a lot of memory. In today's world of GB+ memory pools, are open data paths still relevant?
