Yup, O-rings blew out. I was in Florida watching it from Orlando... And from what I heard at the time, there was sufficient reason to believe they were alive until close to impact... Frankly you're right, both NASA and Thiokol got off too lightly, but I also was very annoyed that the rest of the crew was treated as a distant also ran status...frankly, I think that Resnick, Onozuka(sp?), et al were as much of the hero's of the day as anyone...
