Hi Nathan,

you only see these when you are logged in as Administrator of that 
machine. As Jay found out the "$"-sign can be used to make your own
"user-defined" shares hidden for others on the net.
the shares C$, D$, and winnt$ are always (system-) defined for admin
purposes.
