  • Subject: Optimization Techniques for Overlays?
  • From: "Salter, James" <JSalter@xxxxxxxxxx>

We are now starting to use overlays on several of our spoolfiles. This is
not a problem when you are local to your AS/400. However, our remote users
who dial in to our system cannot wait for several minutes waiting for
downloads.

Are there any techniques or ideas on how to cut down the size of spoolfiles
that have overlays?

It seems like cutting out extra graphics as well as keeping as much text as
possible on the spoolfile are some ways to possibly achieve this.

I have been told by IBM that double queing can be used to translate the
spoofile into ASCII before sending.
(Sending to an outq, translating to ASCII, and routing to another outq.)

Also, has anyone seen any dramatic improvements in remote outq, tcp, etc.
times from V4R3 to V4R4. I was told that IBM
cut out a few extra steps that were not needed in using remote outq's and
that TCP/IP performance has increased.

Thanks.
