We get non-labeled tapes from a vendor and have no problem with the
CPYFRMTAP command. They accidentally sent us a tape in TAR format once and
I had to write a conversion program that took each record (after being
copied to a physical file) and fill a data structure byte by byte until the
end of our line (expected record length) and write a record to the file it
was supposed to be copied to in the first place) they eventually got the
format correct, but it is possible to do it with the 400. It was one of
those fun challenges (somewhat). Not every thing was entirely clean, but
with a little massaging of the data, I was able to get what I needed.

I beleive I am correct that the AS/400 does not support an unlabelled 8mm
tape. It's the same for 1/4 in cartridge. I tried for some time to restore
RS/6000 tapes to a 400. Rochester support said it won't work (at V4R1 three
years ago). They suggested FTP, which worked great.
