     Bruce,

     I think the real issue with record length came from un-zipping a
     file. If the file does not exist, PKZ will create a flat 80-byte
     file. If unzipping to an existing file, it works fine.

     This was true at least for the version I tried. (2.0D230)

That's interesting.  Maybe it's something you're doing.  I use it to unzip
512 byte records every week.  Works fine.
