Hi David - >Is this actually the reason people unsubscribe from mailing >lists? The off-topic and geezer chat doesn't annoy me too much, particularly as some of the geezer chat brings back memories from way past. One of the major annoyances is 23 answers to the same simple question, some of them 3 or 4 days later. As a digest user I don't answer simple questions (unless I have some other slant to the issue) because even if there isn't an answer in the digest I'm reading or one that may be sitting in my inbox, it is highly likely that someone else has already answered it anyway. Even with non-simple questions, I read through everything in my inbox before sending an answer to see if someone else has already sent the same answer. Because of the use of digest mode and because of delays in email, there are always going to be some duplicate answers, but let's at least attempt to minimize them. My other major complaints are more specifically related to digest mode: 1. the use of the HTML. 2. attachments. 3. especially attachments that are binary so they just show up as a bunch of unreadable encoding. 4. quoting back an entire three message (including the trailing banners) just to add one little comment. When a digest is 90% HTML, attachments, and excessive quoting; I think about unsubscribing. Obviously I haven't yet, but it does cross my mind. And some of the offenders are people who certainly should know better. For those reading this, if you think I couldn't possibly be talking about *you*, then I probably am!
