The 3742 provided three rows of 40 characters each. The first row was for machine status, column indication, and error codes. The second and third row were for user data. The 3741 actually provided 6 rows of 40 characters each. Your note is refering to rows 2, 3, 4, and part of 5 which were available for user data. Row 1 was, like the 3742, for status information; the last 30 characters of row 5 for field prompting or field format; and row 6 for display of the current field data being keyed.
