Question about NULLS.

I have a simple question that has me puzzled....

I ftp'd a Comma delimited file to a PF on the 400.

and then I used the cpyfrmimpf command into another PF that has several 50
byte (null capable) fields to snag this data.

Then I run a program over the 2nd PF, so I can change one of the fields.  

Now here is the question... If there is data in the field, I can change it
without a problem... But if the field is Blank, I can't place a new value
into that field.  It just stays blank...

Any ideas how to change the  value of a null capable field that starts out
Null...
