Richard, >What ever happened to Newslink? This board seems to be very active. I can >hardly keep up with the traffic! As another former 'Slinker, its great to see your expertise on this forum. As you may recall, Newslink had a major falling out when switching from the BBS to the CI$ forums. But it still limped along until they also started up some web-based forums, which were particularly slow and not suitable to those of us used to the speed of off-line readers. The CI$ forums continued to carry the more technical discussions, with mosty newbie questions showing up from people who stumbled onto the web forums. Then Duke alleged when their CI$ contract came up for renewal that the terms barred them from running both a CI$ forum and a "competing" web-based forum, and they let the CI$ forum go. Very few 'Slinkers were (are) willing to put up with the hassle of the web based forums. The forum speed and format is somewhat better now and traffic there has picked up, but Newslink as we knew it is history. This list has taken the place of Newslink for me. It (and the other related mailing lists hosted by David) has by far the best depth of technical discussions, and the least problems with spam, etc. Traffic here has grown considerably over the past year. Make sure you use a good email program which can filter the mail based on which list it is from, and do all the thread tracking, etc for you. My personal preference is for Forte Agent (www.forteinc.com ), but others use a variety of things, including Outlook. Using a good news/mail reader is (IMHO) the only way to keep from being overwhelmed by messages.
