Bart Journal the file. This will do exactly what you want. STRJRNPF will save the changes to the file into a journal receiver attached to a journal so that you can produce a log. This is a system level function and cannot be avoided programmatically. It also saves an awful lot of messing around with writing log file functions. I suggest it would be worthwhile to thoroughly RTFM to understand what it is you are implementing as there are a few gotchas to watch out for, but this should get you started.
