You can destroy the activation group. That will close all open files and free up the storage allocated inactive programs. I usually do this with a call to the API CEETREC. As was recently pointed out to me, this program requires two parameters, although both can specify *OMIT. You could also execute the RCLACTGRP command to achieve the same thing. The advantage of CEETREC for me is (aside from the fact that it's simple) that it automatically destroys only the activation group that it is run in, where as RCLACTGRP wants you to tell it which activation group(s) to fry.
