  • Subject: Recommended downtime procedures - was Re: system save
  • From: Rob Berendt <rob@xxxxxxxxx>

We have 12 AS/400's. We do pretty much the following
every 8 weeks. I've typed up my instructions in OV/400
and use a lot of included documents. (I am still trying
to figure out how to do that in Word.) Anyways I copied
the bottom from a spooled document using Op's Nav.

(Unwritten procedures, stored in my head.)
First of all I do a lot of prep work.

I go to the following web site and look up group ptf's:
http://as400service.rochester.ibm.com/supporthome.nsf/Document/10000031

I go to the following web site and look up ptf's for Domino:
http://www.as400.ibm.com/domino/v4r4ptfs.htm

I go to the following web site and order the following:
http://service.software.ibm.com/as400.us.reg/orderptfmedia?lang=english|1
although you have to register first at:
http://as400service.rochester.ibm.com/
latest cum
Group ptf for hipers
Group ptf for Y2K (yes it is still being updated!)
Group ptf for database
Group ptf for both netstation managers
Domino ptf's

Then, I do the following for each licensed program EXCEPT 5769LNT and 5769LNP.
APYPTF LICPGM(####xxx) APY(*PERM) DELAYED(*YES)

DLTF QGPL/QSF*
DLTF QGPL/QMF*

Below is a sample written instruction. It is from one of
our many AS/400's. Although I use extensive Included documents
they are somewhat tailored for the individual machine, and for
what is scheduled for that time. For example I have samples
from many OS upgrades.

Questions which may come from this list:
1) Why do you IPL after the cum then again only after all group
PTF's are on?
Once you've had to reload your OS because of a 'link loader full'
message you'll always IPL after a cum before putting on any other
 PTF's.
2) What is program ROUTINES/DOWNTIME?
Ask and you shall receive.
3) What does the command RCL_SAV do?
The time estimates should explain each step that it does. Also
it logs the length of each step to a file.
4) Can I see this log so that I can estimate how long each step
would take on my 400?

For some strange reason the RCLSTG on our development machine, GDISYS,
takes a huge amount of time thus we tend to only run it once every
other year. We just ran it recently to overcome some corruption.
