First of all, just because you don't have DDS doesn't mean you don't have field 
definitions.  The file might have been defined with any number of tools like 
SQL, IDDU, Op's Nav, and so forth.  Do multiple fields show up if you do a 
DSPFFD on the file?  If so, then you're in for an easy time.  If not, then 
things get trickier.

If you're in the tricky situation then you are limited.  For example, numbers, 
especially if they are packed.

Ideally, redefine the file.  If that is not an option then maybe a logical is 
your best way to redefine the file.
