i'm not totally sure about the 500, but all of the newer machines that
i've worked with (ie black ones without keys) work like this:

the hinges are on the side of the machine, so you open it from the
inside.

there are two up/down buttons, and a little blue enter button. there
should be a little chart about the options, on the as/400 by the
buttons. these are the buttons where you can select your ipl method.
there is also a bigger white button, which is the power button.

there is an option for select ipl, you move the up/down buttons until
it's for the option to select ipl, (either 02 or 03 can't remember
which) and hit the enter button. then you can scroll up and down to
select the ipl method (ie - bm), and hit enter. then scroll up and down
to the start ipl option(either 02 or 03), then hit the enter button, and
your ipl will then start.

the little plastic key is more to lock the machine so no one can use it.

also, i remembered why you need to have a dumb terminal as the console
if your machine isn't set up for having a p/c as the console. you have
to have it in case you're doing a manual ipl.
