Bruce, Changing the system value ensures that new files that are created which default to the system value are properly "translatable" by tools that care about CCSID, such as ODBC and Client Access file transfer. I think changing it is a good practice, and have done it on every system I've been responsible for over the past five years or so. It saves some hassles. Dave Shaw Spartan International, Inc.
