Bob,

    This is the way its been as long as I can remember.  All of my 
(really) old MI stuff uses binary fields for math.

    Binary support in OPM RPG was NOT faster; however, it was way 
slower.  Check out the generated MI for binary field math and you'll 
see why immediately.
