Check this link

of allowed conversions. The answer is a qualified yes - you can convert a
character field in the physical file to a zoned decimal as long as you don't
change the length and as long as the character field is not a
variable-length field. Of course there's also the minor detail of making
sure the character field always has numeric data in it or you will get a
decimal data error when trying to use the zoned decimal field from the
logical.
