Help...I've got lots of questions about setting my 170 up as a web server and the IBM docs don't give clear (enough) answers... I'm hoping this is like most things I've done with the AS400, it's easier to do it than to figure it out beforehand. Looks like I'll find out in a couple weeks when the long-awaited connection is completed. Well, here goes ------ 1. Does simply setting up DHCP on my AS400 allow several PCs to use the same internet connection (router) as the 170 is set up on? Will each PC have internet access and email capabilities? My AS400 uses IP 192.168.x.x, IPs on the other PCs are currently hard-coded, and the AS400 is the only "server" on the network. 2.. Does setting up SMTP and POP servers immediately allow my email to work? Just set up a directory entry for each email address? 3. Should I set up an instance of http server as a proxy server? The IBM docs seem to say that this will improve performance. 4. We've got HTTPserver, Webserver, Websphere... Do I have choices, or what? Are there alternatives to HTTP server, additions to HTTP server? If it's an alternative, which should I use? Have I just got a terminology block or are these actual server products? 5. How do I serve multiple web sites (I have two myself and a few clients I support)? Clip from an IBM doc - "To use multiple IP addresses, your machine must have multiple network connections." Is this two complete ISP connections or just two ethernet ports on the AS400 connected to the same hub (or router)? Or is this even true today? Should/can this be resolved in the router config? If I set up two web sites on the 170, use one connection and two server instances, I can use map/pass directives to seperate the web pages for the two domains...but, I have to use a different port for one of them. Can this be handled (invisible to the user) by the DNS server? 6. What is all the stuff I see with weird-looking domain names, ie., with the AS400 network name in the middle of the domain name? Is this necessary? Can I just use my current domain name (after I transfer it, of course) - www.asresources.com - or do I have to use www.s10##xxx.asresources.com? I've got my web site serving properly as an "intranet" and would like to move my concentric hosted web site to the 170 and add one of those really cool-looking "hosted by AS400e" icons...... What happened to the good ol' days, when you could know just about everything about an AS400?????? I miss Mayberry... Any help will be greatly appreciated.
