Had a friend of mine that had that with a cell phone contract. Because he called a few weeks after the 1 year, they charged him $150 to get out "early". Sorry if that is unrelated, but I'm just trying to say that this type of thing is not limited to AS400 stuff. It is a cruel thing (one of the many) that big companies to the "little guy".
