Jim,

It is important that you NOT check the device type to determine whether a
device is capable of 27x132. There are scenarios involving PC's and
passthru whereby the device type IS capable of 27x132 even when the device
type as documented by IBM is not.

I cannot remember the exact circumstance, but one of the people with WRKDBF
reported that when they used WRKSPLF they got 27x132 and when they used
WRKDBF it got 24x80. This scenario had something to do with the passthru
"from" and the passthru "to" devices ended up being of different types, and
even though the device type looked to WRKDBF to be not capable of 27x132. I
quickly discarded the checking of the actual device type, because I couldn't
depend upon it.

Anyway, as I stated in an earlier message in this thread, simply try a "user
open" to a 27x132 display file and if it fails to open (the "low" indicator
{error}) you know it's 24x80. Someone else mentioned the "3" or "4"
(analogous to *DS3 and *DS4 in DDS) available from the DSM API. This should
work nicely too.

PS: for those of you who are begging to see the source of WRKDBF, you might
be disappointed in my unsightly code (wink, wink). This utility was "born"
in 1992 and its history is RPG. It's now RPG ILE, but I certainly haven't
rewritten it from scratch. Like the old saying goes, "beware of what you
wish for, you might just get it"!
