For those of you who responded, I thank you, the mystery is solved! The real problem was in the construction of the SQL which I did not exactly post. I was focusing on the fact that the MAX function was appearing to be the cause when in fact, there was another selection after the MAX that SQL dod not like there! e.g. select duns, MAX(timestamp), lastaction from CDATA where ...... Part of the WHERE was looking for a LASTACT of 'C' so selecting LASTACTION was redundant, but since the select was within an INSERT into x (select from... I needed the last action. by changing the LASTACTION to a iteral 'C' and adding the group by sugested by many of you the query worked as expected.
