>Please also let me know the maximum number of disk units that this system can >have? The base unit has slots for a maximum of 4 drives, but will only power all 4 drives if you have the 5135 feature power supply. To have more than 4 drives requires the 7117 expansion feature. This changes the width of the machine from about 8" to about 14 1/2" (200mm to 370mm). The 7117 expansion adds 8 additional disk slots, 2 additional tape slots, and 4 additional card slots. The 7117 can also have different sized power supplies, and you need the bigger one to handle all 8 disk drives. Adding disks in the 7117 also means you need a disk controller (eg 6502 or 6522) in the 7117 as the base MFIOP only handles the 4 disk slots in the base unit. The 400-2130 can also use 6607 drives instead, which hold just over 4GB each. Changing the load source (disk 1) is more work, but you could put 6607's in slots 2-4 and get 14GB total (one 6606 and three 6607) without the need for a 7117 expansion. However, there are advantages to using the 7117 instead. The 6502 and 6522 disk controllers allow RAID-5. Buy eight 6606 drives instead of seven, then configure it for RAID-5 protection. In the base unit, convert drive 2 to be a mirror of drive 1. Now your whole system is protected against data loss from a DASD failure. As you may know, the 6606 drives are famous for their "stiction" problems. Another advantage is that you'll have more disk arms which typically means better response time. Plus have room for feature adapter cards and/or tape drives. If you need a good source for the 7117 expansion unit, let me know off-line and we can continue via email.
