The location of the conference in San Diego and the normal traffic in that part of CA will make it very difficult to find lodging within a reasonable commute time. There is an area slightly north of downtown SD called Hotel Row. It is very near a shopping center and in the absence of traffic about 10 minutes from downtown. In order to get to an 8:00am session, you best be leaving the hotel by 7:00am or earlier. Also parking will be a problem. Most travel agents can look up the hotels for you and some may have a shuttle to the airport (which is close to the site). I've always found a good travel agent will save you lots of money.
