Tony,

If you're thinking back to a 1984 solution, you are most likely
remembering the S/34 to S/38 migration aid.

This took cycle WORKSTN programs to a READ/WRITE loop (exception I/O).

If I recall correctly, the migration program would scan your interactive
program to find an unused indicator. Once having done that, it would
create a one time write the the initial screen (like the S/34 S/36 would
do) then wrap your mainline around a DO READ loop.

Like a native program, one could either do an explicit record WRITE/READ
or a generic file WRTIE/READ. The S/36/34 did file write/reads. The
program determined which record was read and acted (hopefully)
accordingly.

To do the same job manually requires an analysis of how clean the cycle
program was written in the first place.

IMHO, having gone through the pains of such migrations, the time spent
getting the old stuff to work (along with fixing all the damage it may
do down the line), the time is better spent rethinking the problem and
bringing it to full native implementation.
