Lets forget the "used" bit it isn't really relevant.  I thought I'd stated my
opinion earlier but I'll briefly repeat it.

As users we demand a number of different sized AS/400s each with a different
performance rating. If IBM had to manufacture a different CPU etc. for each
model the price would be significantly higher than it is.  By using a common CPU
in more than one machine they are able to produce each of them at a lower cost.
In all probability the margin on the low end box in any group is less than their
norm and on the high end box a bit higher. So you overpay on the high end, but
when you upgrade you're probably moving to the bottom end of the next range so
it averages out.

I may feel that AS/400 prices (in particular upgrades such as memory and DASD)
are higher than they should be - and if I was going to get upset about anything
that would be it (well I might start with a good rant about my $#@!*& new-style
console support which after 2 months is still not working!!)

Net is that we probably get cheaper systems because of these speed-bumps and
anyone is welcome to try and bypass them if they choose.
