Just use CHGVAR to go either direction:

DCL        VAR(&CADATE) TYPE(*CHAR) LEN(6)   
DCL        VAR(&NUMDAT) TYPE(*DEC)  LEN(6 0) 
                                             
RTVDTAARA  DTAARA(CADATE) RTNVAR(&CADATE)    
                                             
CHGVAR     VAR(&NUMDAT) VALUE(&CADATE)
