My shop currently has RPG II, RPG III and RPG IV.
All new programs are written in RPG IV. When an RPG III
program needs to be modified it is almost always converted to
RPG IV first.

Converting from RPG II to RPG III, on the other hand, is
not a simple task for all programs. If the program calls a
display file, there is a definite problem, especially as how RPG II
handled S36 display files in the cycle, that does not seem to work
at all in RPG III, and a work around has to be devised.

This company had paid another consulting company quite a large
amount of money to convert all our RPG II programs to RPG III.
This was about 5 years ago, before I started working here. When
I started, the project was no where to be found. I finally got the
consulting company to send me the tapes they had supposedly
created on the conversion, and attempted to compile the programs
in test libraries.

It was, to say the least, a total disaster, with 75% or more programs
not even compiling, and of the ones that did compile, maybe 25%
worked as advertised. So that's about 6.25% of the programs
actually worked. Their solution was to give them more money to
fix the programs.

And, that is why we are still using S36 RPG II code.

Regards,

Jim Langston
