Chris, one very nice way that Ron Harvey talks about is to externally
define one really big data structure with every value the user is likely
to need in the course of the application and then move the datastructure
as one long parm. Advantages are that new development and maintenance all
have a predefined and trouble-free way to move data from job to job, data
is consistent, and many default values can be specific to a user's
particular session.

Ron's talk that he does for COMMON includes examples of fields he
includes, and my memory of it is that I laughed as he started listing the
values he includes because he includes everything from next Friday's date
to last IDNO he used in Accounts Receivable. My memory was that he barely
got it all to fit in a 1024 character parm. But, as he listed the fields
I realized there were many fields that he looks up in the morning, once,
and I look up over and over all day long.

i have about 10 variables that are being used in about 3 CL and 1 RPG
program. what is the best way or the "standard method" by parming them
or using a data area?
