This was in the Newswire/400 today (see below).  It is perhaps the best example
of the number of people using Java.  Java right now is like the old joke on
Teenage Sex (Everyone says they are doing it, but very few actually are, those
that are are doing it are doing it incorrectly, and no one is doing it
well....you get the idea, I don't have the joke exact, but the idea is there).
Jon's  Java quote is the best and probably only true thing about Java that I 
heard all year long.  All I hear from IBM is Java, Java, Java.  I think it is a
great Language, based upon a great concept of hardware independence, but not
everyone is doing it.
