Press F1 on the command, then F2 (general help). The CPF's are now documented 
there, which is vere very very nice.

I seem to remember (way back when) a list of the escape messages returned 
for each command in an appendix of one of the CL reference manuals.  It may 
have been in the CPF manuals of the '38, but I'm positive I remember seeing 
this in print.
