Well of course I can't look at Ed's link till the weekend (have I mentioned that before?) so I'm guessing, but it might be similar to something that was suggested by someone (Bob Cozzi?) when this subject came up a few months ago. He speculated about hooking up a relatively cheap clock synced by radio to an atomic clock. These are readily available. Another possibility, if you want to avoid the Internet, might be to use a GPS receiver. These are now quite inexpensive and generally come complete with a data port for feeding loggers and other instruments. The accuracy of GPS depends on precise timing, and GPS receivers sync themselves to the atomic clocks carried on board the satellites. The accuracy, particularly with DGPS ought to be within a few nanoseconds. Just a thought.
