Perhaps a compromise?
My Grandmother used to make a breakfast dish that would be just right here. 
Tear an egg yolk-sized hole out of a slice of buttered bread. Toss it into a 
frying pan and break an egg into the hole. Salt,pepper to taste, cook till 
browned on each side. She called it "Toad in a hole."
