Small, simple data sets! Even then, MS Query is more prone to puking than a
cheerleader with pint a sloe gin! (like I would know). MS Query is an orphan
product that MS seems about as committed to as IBM is Windows in general (at
least MS query now works with system data sources).

Take a look at using the OLE DB stuff from inside Excel. I'm much happier
with that than I am ODBC and MS Query (although, for ad-hoc queries, it's
probably not the answer).
