In the past few days, we've tried every driver under the sun.

Yes, I could get it to work through the AS/400, as the PC is also connected 
to our token ring, but the performance would not be as good.  By hooking it 
directly to the PC, I get good performance.  I also have use of it when the 
400 is down (eg: SAVSYS, new release [I do more of these than most other 
people].)
