Remember something about you could only use the max if the fields were
displayed in
order row/column. Each out of sequence field reduced that amount by some
factor.
Sounds crazy but I think I had a problem a long time ago till I placed them
in order.

You triggered a confused memory.  There were two different controllers for
the /38, the original one and the enhanced one.  I think one of them had a
limit of 192 fields.  I *think* the original had a limit of 192, and the
enhanced bumped it up to 254.  However, it might be that the original was
128, the enhanced 192, and then the /400 took it to 254 or thereabouts.  Or
maybe that memory's from a different life, number of farmers' fields in a
duchy or something...
