I was answering the  "phones" and taught myself to program(well Im still
learning) with VB doing nothing but Client Server for AS/400.(DDE and
Active X)
Our in house programmer left :so I learnt by buying a ton of books and
cuting and pasting bits of his source code into my projects, got to work
and then when over each line to I understood how it worked.
No teacher or courses.
