Hello Don,

I see other answers explaining UML but if you're interested in learning more 
about UML then one 
of the better books on the subject is:
        UML Distilled
        Martin Fowler
        Addison-Wesley

You might also want to take a look at TogetherJ from Object International 
<http://www.oi.com/>.  
It is a modeling tool that uses UML and generates Java BUT IT GOES BOTH WAYS!  
Change the UML, 
generate new Java; Change the Java, generate new UML.  It is written in Java 
and I think it's 
pretty damn good!  A copy can be downloaded from <http://www.togethersoft.com/>
