The length must be in the range 0-32767, i.e. hex 00000000 - 00007FFF. If, for example, you are passing a zoned decimal number it will be interpreted as an invalid length. So a zoned 5 would be F0F0F0F5, which would be interpreted in binary as a very large negative number, and therefore invalid.
