We are not using OptiConnect, but we are using DDM over Ethernet to connect
a couple of our AS/400's. The set up should be the same. Both environments
rely on APPC/APPN connectivity, I believe.

One big drawback we have run into is the inability of DDM to support a
journaling/commitment control environment. You can't journal a DDM file's
transactions to a local journal. You can journal it on the remote system,
but the local program can't reference that journal in order to do commitment
control transaction rollbacks.

Another limitation is that you can't create adhoc queries (WRKQRY) using a
DDM file as input.

The response time has been fine though, even over 10MB Ethernet. I was able
to copy 1,000,000 records (100MB of data) from one of our history files in
about 8 minutes. I've also had no complaints from our interactive users who
access the DDM files from their applications.

Implementing DDM is extremely easy but it does have what I see as some major
limitations.

Kenneth
