damn. stupid time again. figured out my problem. Thanks for the kindness and ideas though. I did learn some stuff I should know. For those that enjoy the idiocy of others, here's where I went wrong: Everything was as I showed. What I'd missed was that towards the end of the record was another field with a very similar field name and inconsequntial data. That field for some reason is the key for the logical. Upon further searching, I discovered the file hasn't been used because the file didn't behave correctly. I can only conclude the file's designer made a typo and never discovered it.
