You don't mention where you live.

New prices on smallest model (170) is USD 6995, a little less than previous
smallest 150. IBM offers a huge discount for us developers with the
restriction not to sell within one year, so a one year used 9401-150 with
OS/400 V4R1 and more should be at less than USD 3000. Then you also need
RPG and ADT.

Those machines are normally either twinax or ethernet, not both. A used
5250 or a twinax adapter for a PC should be possibly to pick up in a
garbage bin or get for a very small money. 

Machines whithout twinax also have a serial Console cable (for CA Console).
You need this for configuration and other system tasks, but DONT USE IT FOR
NORMAL PURPOSE. It is very very very slow. So it is either twinax or
ethernet.
