I have not been following this thread very much but just happened to look at this message. What is wrong with the RTVMBRD command? FILETYPE returns *DATA for a data file or *SRC for a source file. And you can specify *FIRST for the member name...so unless there are no members in the file, it should work...be a lot easyier than API's and MUCH safer than going after the IBM internal xref files.
